The Miami Hurricane’s football program is known as the breeding ground of the NFL, producing a record number of players who have gone on to gain immortality in the National Football League. The hurricanes currently hold the record for the most first round picks in a single, two-year, three-year and four-year period, producing 19 NFL players between 2001 and 2004. This remarkable pipeline has earned the University of Miami the nickname of “NFL U”. Prominent professional players who started out at the University of Miami include quarterbacks Vinny Testaverde and Steve Walsh; running backs Ottis Anderson and Willis McGahee; wide receivers Michael Irvin and Andre Johnson; linebackers Ray Lewis and Jonathan Vilma; and Defensive Backs Sean Taylor and Duane Starks.
Over the years the Hurricanes have gone on to set numerous school records as well as NCAA milestones, including the following:
- The Hurricanes posted 34 consecutive wins during the 2000-2002 seasons.
- The Hurricanes currently hold the NCAA record for consecutive wins at home, winning 58 home games between 1984 and 1994.
- During a 1954 game against Fordham, the Hurricanes post a 68 point margin of victory, scoring 75 points.
- The Hurricanes went 16 years without being shutout between 1979 and 1996.
The Hurricane Ring of Honor
The University of Miami football program established an exclusive Ring of Honor in 1997 as a way of immortalizing some of the school’s most outstanding players and participants. Players are added to the Ring of Honor regularly, so be sure to check out the permanent upper deck display during your upcoming Miami car rental trip to the Orange Bowl Stadium. Inaugural members of the Ring of Honor included Jim Dooley, Ted Hendricks, Vinny Testaverde and George Mira. These four players are also the only University of Miami players to have their numbers officially retired. A second group of players were later inducted into the Ring in 1999, including star players like Burgess Owens, Bernie Kosar and Otis Anderson.
- Only four University of Miami players have had their numbers retried, not because the school lacks gridiron talent, in fact – they have too much! If Miami were to retire every great players number there wouldn’t be enough jerseys left to field the current squad!
