Manatee World is an environmentally focused, educational attraction located about ¼ mile east of I75 at Exit 141 and is easily accessible in your Fort Myers car rentals. There are numerous motels and restaurants in this area as well.
Manatee World is concerned with the welfare of the manatees and is dedicated to educating the public about this docile, slow moving denizen of the sea. While visiting Manatee World you will learn interesting details about this endangered species. The facility is concerned with rescuing as well as preserving the manatees and their environment.
Leaving your Fort Myers car rentals in the parking lot you can experience the manatees from a tour boat. The boat excursion on the Orange River give you a great opportunity to observe these magnificent sea mammals in their natural habitat. In winter they prefer the warm waters of the Orange River as Manatees are susceptible to cold and in cooler water temperatures will develop bumps similar to frost bite on their sensitive skin. Embarking on your tour please remember the hats, sunglasses, cameras and sunscreen that you packed into your Fort Myers car rentals, also your cooler if you want to bring one.
These massive sea creatures grow to 800 pounds and require at least 32 pounds of food per day. As herbivores (vegetarians) the manatees dine on sea lettuce and sea grasses as well as other sea plants. They appear to graze on the sea gardens similar to cattle grazing in a pasture. Perhaps that is why they are also referred to as sea cows. When first observed by Christopher Columbus’ men, the sailors were convinced that they were seeing the half-fish, half-man creatures of the sea.
Since the manatees are threatened by cold waters during the winter months they search for warmer spots. These locations can be the warm water springs along the Florida shoreline. Electrical power plants send warm water into the inland channels, which are havens for the manatees. They are slow moving mammals swimming approximately 32 kilometers an hour. They really cannot get out of the way of speeding motorboats.
The state of Florida is and has been greatly concerned with the welfare of this natural treasure. Laws have been passed to ensure their safety. The Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act lets the state name certain areas as manatee sanctuaries and establish speed limits for boaters. In winter months at the Crystal River refuge boater, swimmers and divers are denied access because the manatees gather there at that time. If anyone is found to have slain or harmed a manatee he/she is subject to a $500 fine.
Manatee World has designed great programs to explain the manatees and their life cycle. It also encourages becoming caretakers of these wonderful sea creatures. Videos and slide presentations along with puppets help explain the manatees.
After an exciting and informative be sure to visit the gift shop where you find books on the manatee, videos and other informational materials. There are great souvenirs such as tee shirts and inflatable manatee to float in your own pool at home. You can easily stow these in your Fort Meyers car rentals. Donations for the plight of the manatees are gratefully accepted and go a long way to aid the manatees’ cause.
Having experienced your unique day at Manatee World, on your way home you can either park your Fort Myers car rentals at one of the many restaurants or even purchase takeout meals to end an enjoyable outing.
