Car Rentals Fort Lauderdale and Bowman’s Beach

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Myers

Miami

Orlando

What could be more perfect than taking the family on a vacation to Sanibel Island in a Fort Myers car rental? Its beaches are ideal for young children as they slope gradually into the sea, so much so that small children can wade out several yards at low tide with no fear of sudden drop-offs. This allows them, and the entire family, to wade, look for seashells and play in total relaxation.

One of the things that makes Bowman's Beach so special is its geography. While most barrier islands have a north-south orientation, Bowman's Beach runs east-west, which means it acts as a "scoop" to catch shells in the surf. You are sure to find some of the most amazing sea shells at Bowman's Beach on Sanibel Island, which is one of the world's greatest shelling spots. A short drive from Fort Myers, pack up your Fort Myers car rentals and plan to spend the day at Bowman's Beach relaxing in the welcoming sunshine. Bowman's Beach offers various amenities including picnic tables, pay phone, bathrooms, bike racks and it is the only beach with barbecue grills!

Parking for Fort Myers Car Rentals

There are 14 distinct beach areas along the Sanibel shore (and more on neighboring Captiva). Parking your Fort Myers car rentals can be a challenge as space is quite limited. The City of Sanibel offers three different kinds of parking permits:

  • One, the A permit, is only available to Sanibel residents.
  • The B permit is sold at the Sanibel police station. It will cost $80 if you do not own property on Sanibel and $10, if you do. The B permit allows you to park Fort Myers car rentals in public lots without, for the most part, paying any additional parking fees. It's a good deal if you are going to be on the island for an extended stay as the “pay-as-you-park” parking fees can add up quickly.
  • There also is an $80 C permit that allows parking without fees on certain beaches and at the boat ramp. Of course all of this is subject to change. A good place to find out the latest is at the City of Sanibel's website at www.mysanibel.com.

Shelling at Bowman’s Beach

A visit to Bowman’s Beach would not be complete without doing some shelling. People travel from all over the world to discover these “treasures of the sea”. A wonderful activity for both the young and old, you will find many friendly faces with their buckets, bags and nets in hand shuffling along the beach. This stance has become so well known that it has been dubbed the “Sanibel Stoop”.

When packing your Fort Myers car rentals for this fun task of discovery, be sure to bring along a bucket, a net bag and scoop, and some sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. The best time to shell is after a storm, preferably at low tide. It is important to note that it is illegal to take “live shells”; these should be placed back into the water.

Once you have gathered your shells, you will want to clean them off to preserve their beauty and charm. The most effective method to clean shells is to soak the shells in a solution of half water and half bleach for a few hours, or overnight. If there are any barnacles or other matter on the shells, simply remove them with a toothbrush or pick. To make your shells shine, wipe them off with some mineral or baby oil.

A beautiful shell can be a wonderful token of your time spent at Bowman’s Beach.
